Premier: not surprising that resignation of top leadership created confusion

Being uncommon earlier, it is not surprising that the request for resignation submitted by two of EPRDF’s top leadership simultaneously had created confusion among the public, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has said.

At the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) on Thursday, the premier responded to various queries raised by the members of parliament in connection with President Dr. Mulatu Teshome’s recent opening address to the joint inaugural session of HPR and the House of Federation (HoF).

According to Hailemariam, a high ranking political figure with the ruling EPRDF and coordinator of FDRE policy research center, Bereket Simon had filed request for resignation repeatedly before his latest request.

Given his repeated request for retirement from government responsibilities and his lifelong service to the nation, EPRDF had no choice but extend its sincere gratitude and accept his request, Hailemariam said.

Even if Bereket resigns from his government responsibilities, his invaluable contributions are hoped to continue in different ways, he said. Â

About the resignation request from Abadula Gemeda, speaker of HPR, he said this was his first request and the matter is under discussion. If he insists on retiring from his government responsibilities after the discussion, he said, EPRDF will have to respect his choice.

According to Hailemariam, as long as it is democratic, leadership substitution is not bad and should be encouraged.
